ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich.- Ever since the completely redesigned Fusion made its debut it's been a game changer, and now the sedan is adding to its already impressive suite of safety and driver assist technologies! The 2014 Ford Fusion will offer rear inflatable safety belts, becoming the only vehicle in the popular midsize segment to combine the attributes of safety belts and airbags!
With this new technology that contains airbags in the outboard rear seats, Ford Motor Company is demonstrating their commitment to keep drivers and passengers safe while on the road. During an accident, vehicle sensors determine when the inflatable belt should deploy, signaling the belt's tubular airbag to rapidly inflate with compressed gas. The available rear inflatable safety belts in the 2014 Ford Fusion will offer additional protection specifically for rear seat passengers, which tend to be children or older adults who are more vulnerable to head, neck, and chest injuries.
Ford's inflatable safety belt technology can help keep your child safe even if they are seated in a car seat or booster by distributing crash forces across more of their torso up to five times more than a traditional seat belt! Spreading the impact over a larger area reduces pressure on the passenger's chest which helps to control head and neck motion.
The automaker's inflatable safety belts were originally introduced on the 2011 Explorer and have now made their way to the 2014 Ford Fusion, as well as the Hybrid and Energi models. The Ford Fusion is the perfect family sedan, but if you know that your family needs even more space in a vehicle, this safety belt feature is also available on the Explorer, Flex, and Taurus!
